Speech Therapy: Stroke/Aphasia

“Hugely impressive. It’s the first time I’ve seen a language therapy app that really makes use of the potential of the technology” Dr. Anna Caute, Lecturer in Speech & Language Therapy, University of Essex “Cuespeak has become the ‘go to’ app in our team. The contents and design clearly show the developer understands aphasia therapy and what people with aphasia and their therapists want” NHS Tayside, Scotland “Brilliant! The most comprehensive aphasia app I have ever seen!” Kit Clewley, SLT, Keep Communicating, North Wales “This is the best therapy tool I have ever used” Elizabeth McBarnet, SLT, Lismenary Speech and Language Clinic, N. Ireland. Cuespeak is a professional rehabilitation tool for people with speech, language and cognitive difficulties after stroke or brain injury. Produced in the UK and used and recommended by the NHS, Cuespeak contains over 10,000 images, 5,000 videos showing target words being spoken and broken down into syllables and sounds, and more than 30,000 spoken prompts. Exercises from any of the fourteen therapy modules can be highly customised to individual needs and combined into a complete bespoke therapy programme which will run automatically at the single press of a button. This enables people even with significant cognitive problems to carry out prolonged, intensive, independent practice to supplement their face-to-face therapy programme. Cuespeak moves beyond traditional 'picture naming' approaches towards a more dynamic 'question and facilitated answer' format which seeks better to emulate the processing demands of conversation. The 30,000+ spoken prompts include questions, spoken feedback on errors and cues designed to elicit spoken production of target words and phrases. New content is added weekly, including up-to-date questions on current affairs. Cuespeak is optimised for use with a Speech & Language Therapist, but can also be used independently. The app can be managed remotely from another location, with the clinician or other helper sending session updates via the internet, and the user sending back results. An advanced settings menu allows SLTs to tailor exercises for very specific linguistic needs. Target words can be selected according to number of phonemes (sounds), number of letters, number of syllables, first and last sounds, grammatical word class and thematic role. The app contains a library of video tutorials to guide the customisation process. Exercises cover: Spoken word retrieval and production Sentence construction and production Understanding spoken language Practising personally relevant scripts Conversation starters Asking questions Semantic associations Phonology Articulation Spelling Reading This version of Cuespeak is primarily aimed at UK users, using British English throughout and with cultural references geared towards the UK. However, a filter is provided to remove UK-specific questions if desired. The app with sample content is free to download. The full content is unlocked by subscription, through in-app purchases (free trial available). Terms of use: https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/}

What an amazing app. I use this with my daughter, who is on the autism spectrum. Very customizable and the support is outstanding! Great Job!

This app is awesome, however, I will probably not use after free trial as there are too many differences of words and pictures for my patients. The police officers and car are different, buses are different…there are so many words that I’ve never even heard of before. I love the flow of the app and how easy it is to use, but again, too many differences and moments of confusion on top of speech deficits that make this app difficult to use.

I experienced brain damage from an unexpected accident and have been using this application to improve my memory and cognitive abilities. It seems to be working so far.

This app is just what we have been looking for to improve aphasia and limited speech. It’s easy to set up and self explanatory. Worth checking it out but I totally recommend this *****

I wish I had had this technology 20 years ago! It would have saved days and days of preparation, and I would have reached the answers I wanted a lot sooner! Cuespeak allows me to support people with aphasia in a way that combines functionality alongside the theoretical underpinning of what we know about psycholinguistic processing. I am confident to use it knowing that its creator has an understanding of aphasia that is glaringly absent in other apps I have tried to use. The configurations of activities to target different areas (semantics, phonology, orthography), change levels of processing required, and vary the prompts, are endless, it is worth taking the time to use the settings available -if I can anyone can. Amazingly, the app updates with current affairs and topical themes which makes it engaging and relevant. I use it with clients with additional cognitive difficulties too as it provides structure to enable people to demonstrate competence rather than failure. It is intuitive for assessment, therapy, teletherapy, practice, teaching students and encouraging clients to ‘own’ their therapy - love it love it! Susie Hayden Specialist Aphasia SLT

After a year of being recommended lots of apps for aphasia we found Cuespeak and what a great app it is. Now my husband uses it every day and still finds it helpful. This week an update did not load on our old ipad but after contacting the app makers it was resolved and I received fantastic customer service. Thank you very much, anything that helps after a stroke is always good. Julia Osborne

A highly comprehensive Aphasia Therapy App that can also be used for some aspects of Apraxia therapy. The App is highly practical but based on sound theoretical principles.
