Protect your fields, fruit trees, and gardens with precise frost forecasts – tailored exactly to your location. The Night Frost App calculates the probability of night and ground frost and shows you the dew point, the minimum temperature at 2 m height, and at ground level.
Whether ground frost will form at night can be determined for your location using the proven Magnus formula already in the late afternoon (70–80% accuracy) and 30 minutes after sunset (90% accuracy).
Physical background:
After sunset, the earth loses heat toward the sky – especially strongly when there are no clouds. As a result, the near-ground air also cools. The cooling stops as soon as the air becomes cold enough for the contained water vapor to condense into dew or fog. This releases heat, which slows down the cooling and can prevent ground frost.
How much the temperature drops at night therefore depends on the so-called dew point. If the dew point is at 0 °C or below in the evening, ground frost is to be expected during the night. The lower the dew point, the higher the risk. The more parameters are taken into account, the more accurate the forecast.
This app extends the proven, scientifically based Magnus dew point formula, which only considers temperature and humidity, with additional parameters and thus achieves a particularly high accuracy of well over 90%.
Additional parameters are:
• Wind speed
• Cloud cover
• Topography (e.g., depressions, hills)
• Soil moisture
• Location (city, settlement, countryside)
• Unobstructed view of the sky
• Snow cover
Why this app is more accurate than a standard weather forecast:
Standard weather forecasts are regional and cannot capture every cold air accumulation, valley basin, or other local condition. They therefore only provide regional probabilities, which often do not apply locally. The Night Frost App, however, uses your own on-site measurements (temperature and humidity) in combination with the decisive local conditions and thus delivers a highly precise frost warning exactly for your field or garden.
Your benefits:
• Reliably plan frost protection measures
• Protect sensitive plants and crops
• Minimize yield and quality losses
With Night Frost, farmers, winegrowers, gardeners, and beekeepers are always one step ahead of the cold.
