In the 1960’s, the American Bible Society thought, Wouldn't it be amazing if more people could understand the Bible without getting tangled up in traditional language? And they decided to create a new Bible translation that used simpler, more modern English. They called it the New Testament in Today's English Version (TEV) when it first came out in 1966, with the goal of making the Bible more accessible to everyday readers.
The team behind the Good News Bible (GNB) didn’t use a word-for-word translation but instead, they focused on making the Bible's meaning clear and easy to understand, like a conversation rather than a complex history lesson. After adding the Old Testament, it became popular in schools, churches, and among those new to reading the Bible for its simplicity. While some critics felt it wasn’t a perfect translation, many appreciated how it spoke in everyday language, and it remains a go-to choice for clear, accessible Bible reading.
