Watch Tuner is a mechanical and automatic watch testing application designed to measure following parameters: - rate - beat error - amplitude - beats per hour The application uses the build-in or headset microphone to record audible ticks of the watch. You can measure now with your iPhone the quality and stability of the rate accuracy, amplitude and beat error of mechanical watch movements. You can also take advantage of results history. Use in a quiet environment. Any ambient noises can affect result accuracy. Complete silence is the best. Recommended way to record the ticks is to touch the crown of the watch with the headset microphone. You will get the best results using original Apple EarPods. If you don't need such advanced tool as Watch Tuner and all you need is to the check rate accuracy, maybe it's worth to try Watch Tuner Lite - a little brother of Watch Tuner application. If you need frequency diagram look at Watch Tuner Timegrapher - the most sophisticated app of Watch Tuner series.}

Seams to have worked well in setting the beat using the beat error and rate measurement functions. Supposedly anything between 10 & 20 ms beat error is acceptable on a long case pendulum clock but I was able to get down to an avg of 7ms with 10200 samples. App is useless at measuring BPH due to the lack of a decimal reading in the BPH measurement. Had to use a stopwatch and manually count them. Changed the pendulum nut three full turns but BPH never changed. Read 3600 then entire time although manual measurement started at 3660 and ended at 3600. Please update app to add two decimal places to the BPH measurement.

It works pretty good for what it is, results from different measurements are consistent. Real world results match the measurements quite well. My watch was completely off and needed beat error adjustment as well but usually you don’t touch that and only adjust the rate so the lite version of this app will be good enough for most people. If you use this with your phone’s mic it uses the mic near the charging port (for Xr at least)

If you just want to regulate a fast or slow watch, it’ll help. The readings can be inconsistent, definitely to do multiple tests to see if the app is reading correctly. Use the mic on Apple EarPods headphone. The developers must have tuned the app for the Apple EarPods mic specifically. It did not pick up my lav mic at all, even when the mic was placed directly on the movement. Switched over to the EarPods and it started reading immediately. Best results came from opening the case, and laying the mic directly on top of the movement. Accuracy? Not sure, as I don’t have a timegrapher. From watching comparisons, seems to be in the range of the real thing. Probably say you’d want to add +/- 3-8 seconds to any reading. In the end, it helped regulate a 1971 movement to within +/- 1.2 seconds (probably +/- 5-10 sec on a timegrapher) and now the watch actually keeps decent time.

While the app shouldn’t be viewed as a replacement for having a watch checked by a professional, it can help those who collect vintage watches to get an idea in what state the watches are in, and which ones to potentially prioritize for servicing. Works very well with handwound vinage pieces even with the iPhone’s built in mic placed on the watch’s crown. The alternative to this app is buying a timegrapher which is more expensive and not necessarily as accurate as a professional watchmaker’s anyway. With that in mind, this app is definitely worth the money for the casual collector.
