Mandaic is a southeastern Aramaic language in use by the Mandaean community, traditionally based in southern parts of Iraq and Iran, for their religious books. Classical Mandaic is still used by Mandaean priests as a liturgical language, and it is the language of their holy scriptures, including Ginz Rba (the Great Treasure). Neo-mandaic dialects are still spoken by some small groups, particularly in Ahwaz and Khorramshahr (Iran). These varieties, like other Neo-Aramaic varieties, are highly endangered. The Iraqi dialect is believed to no longer be spoken. In the Mandaean religion, the alphabet is viewed as sacred and magical. It is said to represent the power of life and light. The Mandaeans are also sometimes called Sabians. Unfortunately, due to discrimination and ethnic cleansing, many Mandaeans now live outside of their original lands in southern Iraq and Iran, now residing in Australia, North America, the UK, and Scandinavia. مازالت رجال الدين يستخدمون المندائية الكلاسيكية في الطقوس الدينية وهي لغة الكتب والدواوين الدينية الخاصة بهم ومنهم كتاب جنز ربا أي الكنز العظيم. مازالت بعض المجموعات الصغيرة تتكلم اللهجات المندائية الحديثة وخصوصا في أهواز وخرمشهر - سابقا المحمرة - ويقال إن اللهجةالعراقية قد اندثرت فهذه اللهجات مهددة بالإنقراض ويجبالحفاظ عليهم. تعتبر الأبجدية مقدسة في الديانة المندائية ويقال إنها تمثل قوة الحياة والنور. أحايانا ما يسمى المندائيون الصابئة كما تم ذكرهم في القران. للأسف الشديد, بسبب التمييز ضدهم والغسيل الإثني فكثير من المندائيين لميعدوأ يسكنون أراضيهم الأصلية ويعيشون في الشتات في أوستراليا وشمال أمريكا وغرب وشمال أوروبا. من الجدير بالذكر أهمية طقوس التعميد في ديانتهم أي المصبوتة.
