NAMBU is a semi-modular FM synthesizer that allows you to create sounds by combining not only typical FM operators but also six different types of operators: analog synth-style oscillators capable of AM, noise, texture particles, filters, and resonators. as a novice in his stages of becoming intermediate, i decided to spend what i assumed would be a brief project crafting up some presets for my iceWorks collection. all of them were impressive while gorgeous in their own way... but let's just say i'm relieved that i saved what i understood to be King, Nambu, for last... rest assured: the hype is well-deserved. a massive stretch from their earlier synths; with Lagrange being the stepping stone. endless micro-customizations you could fiddle with for hours (and hours)... it felt like i began with a harmonious ambient dreamscape which somewhere delightfully shapeshifted into pure Breakbeat Hysteria. if you're seeking an underdog in the ranks of top-tier iOS synths, bow your head to Nambu.

The sounds are scary good. One of the best synths on the App Store. And I can run it in Ableton on osx!!!

The presets are absolutely underwhelming, and I depend on presets to a) give me a large palette of unique sound options, and b) to learn from in trying to craft my own sounds. This set does neither. I’ve heard all these sounds before. Maybe this synth offers something unique, but you’d never know it from the factory presets ☹️ 🚨On top of that, DSP in AUM maxes out whenever a patch is changed, or even when particular parameters in a patch are switched. This is a problem and makes it practically unusable in AUM. Truly regret spending $20 on this app

Amazing synthesizer, you can go from basic to wicked complex sounds and everything in between. Lovely interface, great sounding effects. A must have

It’s a very deep and capable synth that really reward those who explore it… Brilliant FM synth, this is how it should be done - bravo Icegear ! The interface is well thought-out and makes patching fun. Sweet touches like envelope grouping, and the ability to give every envelope stage its own velocity response. It sounds top-notch. I'm coaxing some gloriously expressive pads out of it.

Big favourite. Easily one of the deepest and most versatile synthesisers on the app store from one of the most prolific iOS synth app developers. Same league as e. g. Tera Pro, Mela, and Butter Synth. Excellent balance between features and usability which makes me use it a bit more frequently than the aforementioned. Way more than just an FM powerhouse – unsurprisingly so if you're familiar with the developer's previous apps (also highly recommended). While it also offers VA style stuff the sound aesthetics are clearly biased towards the digital, from classical FM to highly organic texture-rich sounds. You will need a more powerful iPad for this (I suggest at least a 1st generation M1). Room for improvement: I wish the LFO frequency range would reach further into the audio range so I would not need to sacrifice a full operator for some kinds of texturing. I'd also love to have two more operators available (though I assume the 6 op limit is a compromise for performance)

I love this synth, very versatile, very intuitive, and pretty to look at! I have a small request: would you please release a name list for all 128 samples on the texture osc? I hope it is possible:) all my best from Venezuela!

The synth is a quite capable 6-op FM. Nambu is somewhat modular, meaning that any of the ops can be FM, Regular OSC, Filter, Noise + Impulse or Sample (baked in sounds only). The synth provides very detailed envelopes (9 parameters), which is crucial for FM, a lot of modulation options (not as flexible as, say, Twin3, but nevertheless most things one could think of should should be covered), and a very good fx section (delay, chorus, reverb, compressor, saturation, and EQ). A few minor things missing: - no numeric readout for all controls, only selected few, like ratio or delay. - no separate filter at the end of the chain, in case I can’t spare one of the operators. - lacking proper presets management: tags, descriptions; presets UI is fully handled via iOS menu control, which make navigation challenging, especially when hosting the plug-in in Logic within limited screen space. - feedback is limited to a single op: feedback modulates the same op it originates from, but not other ops in the chain. - drive is way too aggressive, so subtly warming up the sound is not so trivial. - no iCloud synchronization for patches between Mac and iPad versions. There is an export/import functionality though. - no ops voice panning. The only way to widen the sound is via chorus effect. Overall, this is a great plug-in: capable and a pure joy to tinker with. Kudos to the author!
