REVIEWS "[I] know strong bg play when I see it. This app is the strongest iPhone bg app I've played with by far. It does not cheat period. ...Analyzing these matches with eXtreme Gammon confirms a world class level of play with normal luck factors. If you are losing, get over it. So would 99.9% of the other backgammon players in the world. It is just that good. Learn from it." -Richard Munitz, Giant of Backgammon, #21 world ranking in 2009 "Backgammon NJ plays at an extremely high level with an excellent interface, and I often use it to practice on my iPhone when I am traveling. I recommend it highly to my students & friends." -Phil Simborg, Professional Backgammon Teacher & Player, www.mindgamescenter.com "I've played over 500 games now; I've checked about 5% of these against World Class Desktop programs (GNU, BGBlitz); and I've actually used some of the competition. NJ has the best interface & has more useful functions than any other backgammon apps out there." Update: If I could give this app NEGATIVE STARS, there are many days that’s exactly what I would do. Don’t waste your money buying this game if you want an app with a fair realistic algorithm for dice rolls. It is a complete joke in far too many games. It is literally like the algorithm is set to purposefully wipe out the human player, even when it is on the easiest setting. And I suspect it is. It is disgraceful, and the developers should be ashamed for trying to say it is fair. The least they could do is be honest that it’s not… Or maybe they need to take a red pill to wake up to reality. I have played many different apps and games of all sorts, and this is hands-down one of the worst in this regard. Some of the games are fine and then it will go into a streak of games where it would be a cold day in hades before the human will win. :(( ****************************** Horrible algorithm and completely rigged on many of the games for the computer to win. I have it on the easiest setting and I have had numerous games where it completely blocked me from being able to get back on the board, there is no way to win. Yes, I have won many games over time, but when it dolls out games that are so absurdly rigged that it needs either completely boring or completely aggravating when those are not normal odds. It might be a little more fair with the turn based option, but the single player option is often completely absurd with how rigged it is for the computer to be able to win. Ironically, I have had the reverse happen also… Not nearly anywhere close to how many times it can be biased in favor of the computer, but it will still sometimes give me ridiculously several doubles in a row. But what it does not typically do in favor of the human is block the computer from getting back on the board - it may take three or four turns before the computer player gets back on the board but not 6, 8 or 10 turns like it does when it blocks the human player. If that happened on the most difficult setting, then that might make sense. But this is happening on the easiest setting. And this is especially absurd when it is a game that you pay for, like I did for this game. 😠

Good game just spoilt by some ridiculous cheating. Stop lying and give fair, “non-cheating “ dice rolls. The dice aren’t fixed in real games so why ruin this game by doing so here? Spoils your work and makes customers delete the cheat.

Nice to have you back Jimmy. And guess what the dice conspiracy theorists are still here! Still the best on and offline backgammon for iPhone (and pretty much any other device for that matter!). Interface is tried and tested over many years and the AI is so good that people who can't play say it cheats and people who can play have proved it doesn't. Just Google it there are a bunch of people who have run this through every test you can and it just plays well. Please don't post dumb reviews saying how great a player you are and that the AI is rigged. If you do then you just shame yourself. Just read a whole bunch of post-truth reviews with statements like: “the truth is” and “obviously” followed by the usual boo-hoo rant about the computer cheats. It does not. It is easily provable that it doesn’t. Any bugs (ants or otherwise!) then email the developers they are brilliantly responsive and even answer my dumb requests for a luckiness rating so I can show I am the worst thrower of dice on the planet.

This app does not play fairly: take note of when double sixes are rolled it appears there’s always one up it’s sleeve when it needs one usually when it becomes a running game.

Developer’s argument: You’re just not a good player! Response: I know how to play, and I can beat your app at expert level repeatedly. The fact remains that what your program considers an error, and what is actually a sound move diverge greatly on a regular basis. What’s more curious is that the program will make make outrageously flamboyant moves (AKA: errors) which can only be chalked up to knowing what rolls are coming next. Developer’s argument: All dice rolls are pre made, so rigging is impossible. My response: Preordained does not preclude rigging, in fact, it fortifies that reality. Especially when… Developer’s argument: The computer doesn’t know the rolls ahead of time. My response: If that is the case, then many of the moves the computer makes are nonsensical. Without knowing what rolls are coming, why would an expert player put multiple pieces in danger of being taken as a general rule? Because it knows exactly the rolls that are coming. The computer is not making moves on probability, but on certainty. Certainty that there is a 0% chance that I will be able to counter your moves. And if I find a way to win by screwing with the way the computer believes it should be played? Those are errors. TL;DR: The developer is lying to us about this. On the plus side, BGNJHD has got a great interface. Better than most. They’re just lying to customers. ETA: Disregard the developer’s OFFICIAL response below. It’s low energy, boiler plate nonsense. They’re not even trying to properly refute. ETA (2/17/25): Tried the app again to find out if it’s still rigged. It is. Jimmy will claim the app is honest, but that is still not a valid argument. Apps themselves know no morality, they work as programmed. People, on the other hand, are capable of being dishonest, and that perfectly describes Jimmy’s defense of the app.

I think this has great gameplay so I still play it but I am convinced that the game looks ahead on doubling and definitely rolls better than I do when push comes to shove. I only play expert mode but subtle differences in coming out are irrefutable imo. Just my gut but it’s a bit absurd tbh
