"A UI Masterpiece" - App Store Review, US “Patterning beats any hardware drum machine for polyrhythms and evolving patterns.” - Sound on Sound Magazine “An amazingly fun and creative app... Even beginners will create something cool.” - AskAudio "10/10" MusicTech.com. Patterning, the award-winning circular drum machine, is back with version 3. Building on the deep feature set and intuitive interface that has made Patterning a favorite among musicians over the last decade, Patterning 3 introduces new features to spark creativity and rhythmic exploration. And with the latest update to version 3.1, Patterning now also runs on macOS, bringing circular beats to the desktop for the first time. When Patterning launched in 2015, it introduced a fresh take on the drum machine with its intuitive circular interface and a new approach to generating rhythms. Designed to inspire creativity, Patterning became a beat-making hub for musical explorers, creative comrades, and novices alike. With 700+ free user-created and artist drum kits, the Patterning community is strong and growing. In Patterning 3, Olympia Noise Co. continues to innovate with exciting new features such as parametric swing, fill patterns, parameter modulation, an FX track, multiple timelines, and more. Patterning 3 also adds support for AUv3, allowing it to run as a plugin inside a host application. Here’s some of what’s new in Patterning 3: ▶ AUv3
Patterning 3 now operates as an AUv3 plugin, integrating into AUv3 hosts like Ableton Live, Logic, AUM, and more. Multi-channel output and MIDI are available in supported hosts. ▶ macOS
Run Patterning 3 as a standalone app or AUv3 plugin on Apple Silicon. ▶ Parametric Swing
Parametric Swing is a novel approach to musical swing that allows for the creation of beats with a unique feel—from slightly off-kilter to wildly erratic, drunken grooves. ▶ Fill Patterns
Quickly switch to a "fill" version of your patterns, perfect for adding dramatic flair or transitioning between song sections. ▶ Modulation
Apply LFOs, randomization, and velocity to most parameters, crafting beats that pulse, evolve, and react in complex ways. Simply hold the ALT button to assign modulation to your tracks. ▶ FX Track
Dive deeper into sound design with the new FX Track. This dedicated track allows for the automation and modulation of FX parameters, enabling detailed sound sculpting. Manipulate effects over time to add movement, texture, and depth to your beats. ▶ Multiple Timelines
Create full songs, loop sections, and more with the updated timeline editor. ▶ New Effects
Patterning 3 includes new effects: track saturation and ring modulation, a master compressor, and expanded delay and EQ controls. ▶ Audio, MIDI, and Ableton Live Set Export
Export perfect multichannel and stereo loops, MIDI files, and even complete Ableton Live Sets. Drag and drop MIDI from Patterning directly into your DAW. ▶ Quantize and Nudge
Record in beats and keep your groove with the nudge layer, or adjust quantization to bring them closer to the grid. ▶ Fast Automation Layers
Touch a parameter to view and edit its automation layer on the circle. Patterning 3 builds on the huge feature set from previous versions, including: ▶ Unique, circular interface for quick and inspiring beat-making.  Per-track step lengths up to 512 steps in length, playback modes, swing, and more. ▶ Record Beats
Use the drum pads to record beats. ▶ Deep Sampler Engine
Sculpt your sound with controls for pitch, envelope, filter, effect sends, panning, distortion, and ring modulation. ▶ Automation and Modulation
Sequence envelopes, filters, effect sends, MIDI, and more. ▶ Huge Library of Free Drum Kits
Choose from 700+ user-created and artist drum kits. ▶ MIDI Integration
Extensive support for MIDI input and output. ▶ Synchronize
 Ableton Link, MIDI Clock, and AU host sync. …and more. }

The only people I wouldn’t recommend this drum machine to are people that don’t like or need a drum machine and people that have a fear of circles.

The ease of getting a beat going, the modulation, the sample kits, the routing, the updates, all make this an incredible piece of software. Ben, the apps developer, is a class act, who has some incredible useful information about not just the app, but drum / music in general sprinkled in Olympia Noise Co.’s YouTube Channel. One of my favorite software purchases ever. Can’t recommend enough.

Absolutely the best, there is no better drum machine. This app keeps getting better and better, more and more polished. Having said that, even the very first version was already excellent. There’s nothing that comes close to this app.

I’m only scratching the surface and I can only describe my reaction as “awe”. It’s simple, profoundly fun, immensely useful, and easy to understand. This will up anyone’s drum game, but you can just use it as a sequencer too. Works perfect on M series Macs too. I can’t even wait to get this running midi… dear lord. And the free kits!! Alone worth hundreds. I got carpal tunnel just trying to get through the featured ones. Best musical $30 I ever spent, not even close.

But it exceeded my every expectation! Just how happy I am that you can now NAME is awesome. The timeline is SO MUCH BETTER! The FILL function is brilliant! Everything is just so pretty! Haven’t been able to figure out how to clear a loop, but outside that, everything is intuitive and a pleasure to use. Thank you for this awesome app!

Well hoo boy, let me tell ya somethin’, folks… I’ve seen a lotta games in my time — Super Bowls, snow bowls, bowls of chili — but Patterning 3? That’s a whole different kinda field. This app ain’t just tappin’ drums, it’s callin’ plays from outer space! You open it up, and boom — there’s a big ol’ circular thing starin’ back at ya like a UFO over Lambeau Field. You spin it around, drop your snares, your kicks, your hi-hats — BAM! Touchdown! I mean, I don’t even know where the quarter went, but the groove keeps runnin’ the clock. The sounds? Oh, they hit harder than a rookie linebacker who forgot his manners. You can tweak, tune, pan — it’s like watchin’ a no-huddle offense made of rhythm and whiskey. The interface is smoother than Joe Namath’s pantyhose commercial. Only downside? After three bourbons, that spinning circle’ll make you dizzier than overtime in Denver. But you’ll still be tappin’ your foot ‘til Monday Night. Final Score: Patterning 3 absolutely runs the beat game!

I absolutely love using this app. While I’ve become a much better finger drummer at live playing into hardware grooveboxes or pad controllers, the downside of that is that I can easily fall into the same patterns. With an app like this, it allows me to tweak things to get something I never would have come up with manually, or even on a traditional piano roll grid. Favorite features are the ability to have different step lengths for poly rhythms, ability to rotate loops, and how easy it is to modulate various things. Especially for hi-hats, these allow to really get some variety and human feel. The only thing I’d love to be added is to show the number of steps on the modulation of course tuning, so that it would be easier to see when setting notes for a synth or something. P.S. please find a UI for it to get to iPhone. The version 2 is missing some stuff I love in 3.

Finding solutions for programming easy and intuitive polyrhythms has been way more challenging than I thought it would be. There’s this, there’s the Harpax, and there’s HY-SEQ16x3. Probably the Circlon as well, but thats very pricey. Highly recommend this app if polyrhythms are a part of your creative process!

This app is a very intuitive drum machine and midi sequencer. Fun to mess around with and endlessly customizable! I do think it needs better integration with other apps (has AUV3 but doesn’t play well with Logic Pro, crashes, cannot select a project). Also wish it had more realistic kits available. Great app though and very much worth the purchase
