Patterning, the award-winning circular drum machine, is back with version 3. Building on the deep feature set and intuitive interface that has made Patterning a favorite among musicians over the last decade, Patterning 3 introduces new features to spark creativity and rhythmic exploration.
And with the latest update to version 3.1, Patterning now also runs on macOS, bringing circular beats to the desktop for the first time.
When Patterning launched in 2015, it introduced a fresh take on the drum machine with its intuitive circular interface and a new approach to generating rhythms. Designed to inspire creativity, Patterning became a beat-making hub for musical explorers, creative comrades, and novices alike. With 700+ free user-created and artist drum kits, the Patterning community is strong and growing.
In Patterning 3, Olympia Noise Co. continues to innovate with exciting new features such as parametric swing, fill patterns, parameter modulation, an FX track, multiple timelines, and more. Patterning 3 also adds support for AUv3, allowing it to run as a plugin inside a host application.
Here’s some of what’s new in Patterning 3:
▶ AUv3
Patterning 3 now operates as an AUv3 plugin, integrating into AUv3 hosts like Ableton Live, Logic, AUM, and more. Multi-channel output and MIDI are available in supported hosts.
▶ macOS
Run Patterning 3 as a standalone app or AUv3 plugin on Apple Silicon.
▶ Parametric Swing
Parametric Swing is a novel approach to musical swing that allows for the creation of beats with a unique feel—from slightly off-kilter to wildly erratic, drunken grooves.
▶ Fill Patterns
Quickly switch to a "fill" version of your patterns, perfect for adding dramatic flair or transitioning between song sections.
▶ Modulation
Apply LFOs, randomization, and velocity to most parameters, crafting beats that pulse, evolve, and react in complex ways. Simply hold the ALT button to assign modulation to your tracks.
▶ FX Track
Dive deeper into sound design with the new FX Track. This dedicated track allows for the automation and modulation of FX parameters, enabling detailed sound sculpting. Manipulate effects over time to add movement, texture, and depth to your beats.
▶ Multiple Timelines
Create full songs, loop sections, and more with the updated timeline editor.

Patterning 3 includes new effects: track saturation and ring modulation, a master compressor, and expanded delay and EQ controls.

▶ MINIMAL MODE. Catch a vibe, remove the clutter! In the File Menu, use "ENTER MINIMAL MODE" to hide all controls in the app except for the main circle and transport.
▶ LOOP SIZE. There are now three "loop sizes" - small, medium (default), and large - which set the height of the currently selected loop in the main circle UI. This setting selected in the main file menu. After changing the setting and restarting the app, the size of the selected loop will be changed.
▶ RESET PARAMETERS. Remove all FX, playback parameters, and modulation on a kit for a fresh start. Found in the DRUM KIT file menu.
New in Patterning 3.2:
▶ Auto-Create Kits
New AUTO-CREATE KITS option in the Project Kits tab. When enabled, a new drum kit is automatically created for each new pattern. Ideal for workflows where each pattern needs unique sounds or settings.
▶ Pattern Reset
Added per-pattern reset option. When enabled, the pattern resets to the beginning each time it is triggered.
Show this feature by holding ALT in the Pattern Select tab. Use APPLY TO ALL to quickly apply across all patterns.
▶ Project Drum Kit Images
Project drum kits now display randomly generated images for easier visual identification. Images are created by cropping a random section of the kit’s official art.
▶ Timeline Reordering
You can now drag to re-order Timelines in the Timelines view.
Note: This works only when the clock is stopped.
▶ Export UI Improvements
Exporting now provides clearer platform-specific options:
- On macOS Standalone: Always prompts for save location. Standalone version includes “Show in Finder” after export.
- On iOS: Includes “Share” and “Show in Files” options.
