Sure, it's "just" a dictionary app... As a reader, you can use it like you would normally use a dictionary, to look up specialized or unusual words, and you'll get what you expect: a concise definition to get you back to reading. But... here's the great part. As a writer, you can also use it to look up words you already know. Or think you do! And you should, because this is Mr. Webster's actual and original dictionary. The real deal. The magic is in the definitions for commonplace words. Just take a look at the screenshots! This is good stuff. It will delight and amuse. It may even kindle your imagination. The author's personality shines through in colorful prose that's packed with classic examples of usage. And! Remember paging through a big hardcover dictionary looking for a word only to get sidetracked exploring other words you'd stumble across? Oh-hoh! If I may bend your ear a moment longer... The usual way to do search is to show only results that match what has been typed so far. And normally that's perfect: don't show you anything you don't need to see, right? But if I did it that way, how can you get sidetracked? So I went a different direction. All of the words are in a giant list. You can scroll it or jump to a letter. And as you search, it scrolls to the first match. It's fast and you can find what you want quickly, but it still leaves room for serendipity. Get it and get writing!}

A rich, beautiful, elegant and traditional English dictionary, that avoids and ignores wokeisms. A treasure of a dictionary that I pray remains supported.

Handsomely printed, skillfully bound, thorough little volume. (That is, digitally printed and digitally bound.) 💯👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

This dictionary is a got to have for older English works and I really enjoy using it with my Bible. I rely on it more than I ever thought I would.

Words such as “polis” are not included. So what’s the use?

Provides not only a literal definition, but a contextual one along with connotations associated with the word in history. For example, looking up a simple definition of the word "fire" in a regular dictionary would yield: The phenomenon of combustion manifested in light, flame, and heat. Of course a regular dictionary would also provide other definitions such as burning passion, liveliness of imagination, and firearms. This dictionary, on the other hand, will provide the same definitions, among many others with notes such as: Anciently, fire, air, earth, and water were regarded as the four elements of which all things are composed. Splendor; brilliancy; luster; hence, a star. Intellectual and moral enthusiasm; capacity for ardor and zeal. A lovely, reliable, pocket writer's dictionary. A true companion, a gem. It's nice to have a friend.

I am exceedingly fond (in the modern, not the original, sense) of this dictionary. I use it for everyday word look up but depend on it even more to understand the meanings of words in the 19th or even 17th century. Thanks to the authors of the dictionary and the application!

A number of typographical corrections provided by readers as well as an appearance improvement for dark mode (thanks, Ted!) and a snazzed-up icon.
