After looking at many, many apps that claimed to be "GPS" compass apps but don't work if the phone doesn't have a magnetometer, I found this one. The display is well-designed, it says it can work in GPS-only mode, and it provides latitude, longitude, altitude, and velocity as well as heading. After installing it, I went outdoors and set the compass for magnetic mode. My original review was a one-star, negative review. After discussing compass apps with a friend, I reinstalled this app and gave it another try. I'm not certain why it didn't work well the first time, but the second try was much better. My phone doesn't have a magnetometer so I have to use the GPS mode. That means I have to be moving for it to show a heading. I found that simple walking a few steps and about 1.5 to 2 MPH is enough movement to generate a heading. The latitude, longitude, and elevation are derived from the GPS data. I checked those against a USGS map and they are reasonably accurate. Also, the speedometer readout agrees very closely to the speedometer in my car. I haven't investigated the way points yet. Those are more than I was looking for, but may prove to be useful some day. The user manual needs to be more informative. For example, I can't find any way to delete waypoints once they have been set. There is also a way to call up maps, but that's not documented -- I found it by accident.

I was specifically looking for an app that can accurately point to cardinal directions without a magnetometer, using only geolocation signals and my phone's accelerometer. Alas, this isn't it.
