A meld consists of either sets or runs. A set is composed of three or four cards of the same rank, such as three 7s or four Queens. A run, on the other hand, comprises three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, such as 5, 6, and 7 of hearts. Once a player has formed valid melds, they can "knock" to end the round, revealing their hand for scoring.
Scoring in Gin Rummy is based on the value of the cards in melds and the deadwood points, which are the values of the cards that do not form part of any meld. Aces are worth one point, numbered cards are worth their face value, and face cards are worth ten points each. The player with the lowest deadwood count earns the difference between their deadwood points and their opponent's deadwood points, with any remaining unmatched cards counted against the loser.
