The Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) of the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) launched the “Scameter+” mobile app (the “App”), which is a cyber security app to help the public identify frauds and online pitfalls and increase their crime prevention awareness.
【Key Features】
◆ Scameter Search Engine:
Scameter Search Engine helps you identify frauds and online pitfalls. When encountering suspicious calls, online sellers, friend requests, job ads and investment websites, etc., you can enter the platform account name or number, payment account, phone number, email address and URL, etc. into the search engine to instantly assess the risk of fraud and cyber security.
◆ Call Alert:
This feature is a call detector targeting the main type of spam calls, which is phishing/scam calls. When this feature is enabled with your consent, the App requests the Call Log permission from your device and pushes verified phishing/scam phone numbers to your device in hashed format every day as a local database. The App reads your call log for automatically comparing the incoming caller ID and sends you notification alerts when the call you received is verified as a phishing/scam number. To safeguard your privacy, all the logical comparisons run locally in your device and we do not save or submit your personal data, including call records, to any remote server nor third party.
◆ Website Detection:
This feature is a phishing/scam website detector. You can enable the phishing/scam domain filtering by enabling the local VPN tunnel in the App with your consent. The App pushes verified phishing/scam domain lists in hashed format to your device every day and stores them as a local database. The VPN tunnel compares the domain locally with the websites you visit and you will receive notification alerts if a potential phishing/scam domain is detected. To safeguard your privacy, the VPN tunnel only runs locally without any remote connection and the domain comparison only occurs in your device and in hashed format. We do not save or submit your personal data, including browsing history, to any remote server nor third party.
◆ Public Intelligence:
If you come across suspicious websites or phone numbers, share them instantly through this feature. The information you provide might be added to the scam database after our analysis, and accessible to all users who use the "Scameter Search", "Call Alert" and "Website Detection" features. This collective effort aims to reduce the risk of scams for everyone. Please note: This public intelligence platform is solely for receiving scam-related intelligence. To make a Police report, please call a nearby police station or dial 999 in case of an emergency. You may also visit the “e-Report Centre” for non-emergency reports.
