Residual Bowel App is intended for use by Canadian healthcare professionals (primarily surgeons) to track bowel resections and provide an estimate of the bowel remainings. It functions as a measuring device for this data which experienced medical professionals can use, in combination with published medical research, as part of their decision-making process.
Capture resection or residual data:
Record the length of each resected or residual bowel region manually, using the live augmented reality environment, or visual estimates of the colon.
Create a patient report, including:
* Patient data (age, height, weight)
* Resection/residual data
Measurements of each resected/residual length
Calculations of the estimated missing/remaining small bowel and colon
* Additional patient information
Small bowel resection location
Status of ileocecal valve, G-tube, distal feeding tube, and stoma
Estimated remaining intestinal length is calculated based on calculations adapted from the study entitled, “Establishing norms for intestinal length in children”. Struijs M-C, Diamond I, de Silva N, Wales P. Journal of Pediatric Surgery 2009;44:933-938.
The app generates a detailed PDF report of the data and calculations, which can be emailed for inclusion in patient records, as well as an optional image-only PDF to illustrate the patient’s anatomy.
