Oz Phonics is a series of iPad exercises and printable worksheets taking students through the beginning steps of learning to read. Students are first taught to identify the sounds in words (phonemic awareness) and then shown ways of representing those sounds in letters. This method is called synthetic phonics, and research has shown it to be the most effective method of reading instruction.
We highly recommend that for home use, parents/helpers take an active role in instruction. The exercises are not designed to consume time, but are for teaching and reinforcing specific reading skills.
The apps are particularly effective for students who struggle to read using a "word list" type approach - exercises are designed as simple games but where possible, visual and audio distractions are kept to a minimum. Descriptions of exercises and phonemes(sounds)/graphemes(letters) covered are available in each individual app description.
