Vanaf het einde van de achttiende eeuw werd de Statenvertaling – in die tijd de meest gebruikte Nederlandse bijbelvertaling - minder toegankelijk en begin twintigste eeuw waren velen het erover eens dat deze vertaling eigenlijk niet meer voldeed. Pogingen in de negentiende eeuw om de Statenvertaling te vervangen waren mislukt, biblia nbg. In 1911 besloot een aantal theologen een nieuwe Nederlandse vertaling te maken die in de breedte van de kerken gebruikt kon worden en in taalgebruik niet te zeer van de Statenvertaling af zou wijken, nbg biblija. In 1927 ondersteunde het Nederlands Bijbelgenootschap (NBG) deze onderneming en kwam er schot in. De vertalers waren afkomstig uit verschillende protestantse kerken en maakten deel uit van verschillende theologische richtingen. In 1939 verscheen het Nieuwe Testament en in 1951 de volledige Bijbel. De NBG-vertaling 1951 werd al heel snel door de meerderheid van de protestantse kerken in gebruik genomen, nbg biblia, en is lange tijd de meest gebruikte vertaling geweest binnen de protestantse kerken}
